ELSA Support has a long standing reputation for delivering useful and informative digital downloads for ELSAs (Emotional Literacy Support Assistants) in schools, so when they decided they wanted to create some colourful enamel badges to help ELSAs identify themselves amongst the faculty, they asked us to help bring their vision to life as well as capture the imagery and graphics for the website listings.

About the Project

ELSA Support knew what they wanted on the badges, but needed some help pulling it together into a cohesive design. It was important that the badges display the word “ELSA” to make it clear who the staff member was, but also to include the bee imagery as part of the ELSA Support branding. The badge needed to be a safe and sturdy, so no sharp edges or delicate pieces of metal sticking off to the side, so we went for a rounded rectangle name tag style design, with a fun cloud shape to hold the bee logo. It also needed to conform to the requirements of the manufacturing process, so we had to remake ELSA Support’s hand drawn bee logo into a solid colour illustration, adding an outline to the wings to ensure they were clear.

When it came to the photography, we wanted the images to really pop and show the shine and bright colours of the badges. This required some careful lighting placement with one light to illuminate the scene in general, and another placed very carefully on the opposite side of the badge in order to create that reflective shine, without causing an overbearing glare.
